Before I built a
wall I'd ask to know

I paint
a self-portrait every year. “Painting is my self-indulgent pursuit, my
curiosity reaching. It has led me around the world. I cannot not-paint. I am
doomed and lucky as royalty are doomed and lucky. So far, I have survived this
continuing single-minded indulgence. I’m trying to express with paint and
shapes something about being human — not all of it, but something of it that is
recognizable. My goal is to make a gift to share, to help and say, ‘You are not
alone.’”
